about

When I close my eyes and dream of a river it’s in motion, setting the pace for its surroundings in stark relief. That’s part of what makes a frozen river so jarring — it plays with your sense of solidity, your ability to reason about what you’ll encounter along its banks.

Rivers don’t freeze all at once. It starts with a foothold along a shallow edge that's protected from the flow and grows larger. Then, on the coldest night, it spreads from all sides till the center becomes solid, a hypnagogic fade to black. Once the ice takes hold its grasp is tenuous, and only a string of coldest days stands a chance against the flow. This is a dream the river dreams and will awaken from.

When I arrive in early morning at the Royal River in late February it’s so still that I hear everything around it for the first time, the white noise swoosh gives way to crackling branches and soft birdsong. I love the way sound can play with our sense of solidity, the way a rhythm can lull you into following a central pulse and then shift beneath you when combined with a new sound. That frozen river moment when background and foreground trade places and time shifts.
